Organophilic Clay

  Dynagel *1 is an organically modified bentonite used as a gelling and viscosifying agent for primarily diesel-based drilling fluids. Dynagel *1 is used in the ***0lb/bbl (5.***8.5 kg/m3) range depending on the desired viscosity properties, mixing system, and temperature. Higher concentrations are used when preparing spotting fluids, packer fluids or other special systems. Maximum viscosity is normally attained after a complete circulation of the fluid thru the bit, so care must be taken not to over-treat upon initial mixing..

Preparation of Base Mud
   Mix #0 Diesel oil with Lime, Branded Emulsifier and Branded Wetting Agent for *0 minutes on a Halmilton Beach mixer at ***0 rpm. Prepare calcium chloride brine separately by dissolving *9.3 grams of calcium chloride into *2.0 cc water. Add the brine to the oil phase while brine is still hot. Mix brine into oil slurry and shear for minimum of one hour at ****0 rpm. 

Performance test
   1) Measure out **5.0 grams of base mud into a mixer cup, add *0.0 grams of organoclay sample to be tested. Shear the samples for *0 minutes. During shearing, stop mixer and scrap down the side of sample to insure all product is evenly mixed.
   2) Determine the Fann Model *5 Meter readings at all six speeds at **0F in a Fann heater cup.
   3) Record AV, PV, YP and 3 rpm reading, and report YP, where YP=2*R**0 reading-R**0 reading.

  Dynagel *1 is used in the ***0lb/bbl (5.***8.5 kg/m3) range depending on the desired viscosity properties and the type of base oil used. Also, diesel base fluids will show faster yield, so when synthetic oils are used, it is important to not over-treat the system upon initial mixing.

Preparation: 
  Dust Dynagel *1 and lime to mineral oil and mix for *5 minutes on a Hamilton Beach mixer at ***0rpm, and then drop Branded emulsifier and Branded Wetting Agent and mix for an additional 5 minutes. Add calcium chloride brine and mix for *0 minutes. Finally add barite and mix for another *0 minutes at *1,**0 rpm.

Testing: 
  1) Measure initial rheological properties at room temperature (approx. *0F) with a Fann Model *5 VG Meter. Determine values for all six shear rates as well as gel strength at *0 seconds and *0 minutes. 
  2) Hot-rolling age the sample at **0F for *6 hours. 
  3) Cool the sample and re-mix for *0 minutes on a Hamilton Beach mixer at 6,**0 rpm. And then re-determine rhoelogical properties and Gel strength as step 1.
  4) Report Yield Point and Gel Strengths, where Yield Point=2*R**0 reading-R**0 reading.
