NaAlF4 (SAF) is a cost effective substitute for fluoride compounds used as flux. It has been used in replace of cryolite (Na3AlF6) and AlF3 for aluminum manufacturing. It has lower NaF/AlF3 ratio (1:1) than that of cryolite (3:1), making it a suitable material for adjusting NaF/AlF3 ratio or acidity during aluminum electrolysis, saving AlF3 usage. It could also be used in secondary aluminum industry. It has lower melting point than cryolite and could be used as a fluxing agent for welding rod. It could be added to the slag during steel making, facilitating the de-oxidation process.
