Engineering to produce DRI (using H2+CO as reductant) has favoured cooled DRI material because of difficulties with discharge of “Hot DRI”. Problem encountered is at the reactor and the reason is that the HOT DRI agglomerates forming very large lumps. Lumps of DRI are formed when the bed fails to descend evenly. What is needed is a discharge mechanism which will ensure evenly descending bed of HOT DRI all through to the discharge of the reactor. I have deliberated on known arrangements and I find a flaw. I have confidence in a scheme that will meet our objective of uniform (across cross-section) flow of material from the reactor. The arrangement will prove additional benefits besides uninterrupted run of the reactor. It will not call for stringent restrictions on raw material specifications, additions and treatment. It will also give savings through reduced specific energy-consumption.
